I am so excited! I finally made it over to the Half Moon Bay Nursery this afternoon. I have been trying to get there since we moved, but the traffic has been so bad in that direction I didn't even want to try. I went that way once and it took me over an hour to go 6 miles. Yeesh! Today was much better. I went all the way to Home Depot and it only took me about 20 min. Checked out yet another Target in my quest for the perfect Target here too. This one was much less crowded than the ones I usually go to, which was a nice change.
I digress! Back on topic! So, the nursery was AWESOME. Unbelievable plants, very well taken care of, and super nice staff. Can't beat that! Oh yeah, and great prices too. I have found a new favorite place! I am in the market for a nice orange tree and they had tons of citrus, plus any other fruit you can think of! They had lots of blueberry bushes too. I have been wanting to have blueberries for a long time, so I think I will do those too! The hydrangeas were unreal also. And there were so many plants that I have no idea what they are, but they are so pretty. Ever since we moved her I have been seeing this bush/tree with these huge purple flowers on it. I even found those at the nursery today. It is called a Princess Flower and the only reason I didn't bring one home with me was that the nursery closed before I made it back. I didn't want to buy one and then drive all over the place with it in my car.
I did get my rhubarb starts and my splurge was asparagus starts. They were a whole 35 cents per crown! Shaddy and I love asparagus, so I am pretty excited about that. Gardening will be a bit of a challenge here with the gophers, so I plan to do quite a bit in containers. Rhubarb and asparagus, not so much though. I do have a section of flowerbed in the back that I plan to dig out and line with gopher wire. I am also armed with a bunch of gopher wire cylinder things that you put in the hole before you put the plant in also.
I found some great planters at Home Depot. They are fiberglass whiskey barrels. They are huge and not too deep. They aren't terribly expensive so that is nice also. The only thing I haven't quite figured out where to put is my peas. I think they will last most of the summer here, so I need to find a place they can just hang out for a while. There is more flowerbed in the backyard, but one end of it is full of rocks. Our landlord said he plans to come and dig it out and replace it with dirt, so that would be nice. If not, I will just put containers on top of it and go with that. Containers are going to be my friends I think.
It was so nice to get out and start planning some of this. I was feeling a little overwhelmed at the newness of all the plants and climate and all here. Now I am feeling like I can actually do this. Yay!
Wow, can't believe you're gardening already. We have a foot of snow on the ground and temps in the single digits coming this week. Sigh. You're gonna have a blast with all the new plants and that mild climate. Can't wait to get out there and see what you've done!
