Ocean #1 Part 2

Alright, here we go!  I traced my enlarged pattern onto the dull side of the freezer paper with a Sharpie marker.  Then numbered the pieces and added the hash marks where they connect.

Numbered and ready to cut out.

And I as I noticed after I cut the pattern apart, I forgot a couple of hash marks that connect the pieces.  No big deal, right?  Actually, it is impossible to reassemble the pieces without them.  Note to self:  make sure that all hash marks are there next time!

Cut up and ready to go!

Ironing the freezer paper to the fabric

Once again, I was using a tutorial from QNM magazine.  I did not make this up myself, but I did document it so I can do it again!  I liked this method, because you simply cut the shapes apart and then ironed them to the right side of the fabric.  I always have a hard time with remembering to reverse things or thinking about it backwards because you are working from the wrong side of the fabric.

All ironed and trimmed

I really wanted to rip all the freezer paper off at this point so I could see what it would look like, but I restrained myself and started sewing pieces together instead.  You lay the pieces out next to each other, peel up the edges of the freezer paper, and put the darkest fabric on the bottom.  Then you adjust the pattern so there is just enough room for a needle to go between the pattern pieces and iron it back down.  As I discovered, it is much easier to do this on a seam that covers more than one piece if you actually LINE UP THE HASH MARK when you put it back together.  Then you just follow the line between the pieces as you sew.

Starting to sew it together

See where I didn't quite line up the hash marks?

As you sew each piece on, you pull back the freezer paper from each seam and trim the top fabric as close to the seam as you can.  You will be covering this edge with something (couched yarn, satin stitching, whatever) so you want to get it as close as you can.

All sewn together

Then, it's the moment of truth...time to rip that paper off and see what you have!

Tah-Dah!

And just in case you were wondering, I decided to go with the dark blue on the lower right wave.  Next up is couching white yarn over the seams, quilting, and then binding.
