In the last couple of weeks the weather has taken a turn. Instead of 70 during the day and 60 at night, it is now 60 during the day and in the mid 40s at night. We have shifted from short sleeve shirts with a sweatshirt in the morning, to long sleeve shirts with a vest or maybe a light jacket in the morning. Of course that is just us. I have seen people here walking around in heavy winter jackets, hats, and heavy duty mittens. Errrr? We are a bit of an anomaly, but wool hats and gloves when it is 50? Really?
Out of curiosity I looked up average temperatures in the winter. We are actually running more like December and January weather, slightly cooler than average. It is supposed to get rainier (is that a word?) than it is now, but the temperatures won't get much colder than it is now. Whoa...this is going to take some getting used to! It is going to be really hard to get into the Christmas spirit with no snow and roses (still) blooming in the front yard. If it is sunny in the afternoon, I can even open windows!
The lack of fall has been odd too. Not a fall colored tree in sight and nothing has dropped leaves. Well, except our yard. Our landlords planted a Japanese Maple and some other sort of Maple tree that actually turned a very nice red and is finally dropping it's leaves. I didn't think the maple would change color here, but I guess it has to do with the length of day not the temperature. (Thanks Mom and Mom in law!) The landlord told me that he ordered the tree from North or South Carolina and that it is some special type of tree to change color in this climate. Who knew? The poor Japanese Maple dropped all it's leaves last month. It still looks pretty with the red branches, but kind of sad with no leaves!
I keep waiting for the weather to snap cold. I expect to walk outside and see my breath and have to break out the ice scraper for the car windows one morning. I think I will be waiting a while...
People in CA must have thin blood. I saw the same thing in South Florida when I was there. 50 degrees and people were pulling out their long johns. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteIt's finally getting to be winter here. 35 or so today, with light snow in the morning. We went for a walk in the woods this afternoon. Ice in the streams, and a skim of ice on the Dead River Reservoir. It was really nice, as long as you kept moving!
Guess you won't have much winter to contend with out there. I know you'll miss it when it's -25 back in Shakopee this winter, and the snow piles high! :D
