Gardenorama!

Woohoo!  I am off and running now!  Here is what it looks like now:

Pots full of soil (and some even have plants!)

All mulched and ready to go!

So, last Sunday I got my strawberries and broccoli all potted up.  I ended up with 2 and a half big pots full of strawberries!  Guess I got a little carried away, but I have no doubts they will all get eaten.  Of course I had to finish planning what will go where before I could get started.  I also discovered that the asparagus that I thought was dead, was not in fact dead.  It was just slow getting started.  So now I have 5 asparagus plants.  I even took a chance and planted that last one outside the gopher wire cage.  Gasp!  It will be my sacrificial asparagus to appease the native wildlife.  Or maybe they will ignore it and it will be the biggest and best asparagus plant ever!

This week I worked on figuring out which tomatoes and peppers I want to order.  I decided on 2 cool weather full size tomatoes, 1 early girl bush style, and 4 different types of cherry tomatoes.  I am trying all container varieties that you aren't supposed to have to stake or very minimal support needed.  2 of the 4 cherry varieties that I am ordering are cascading style to hang over the edge of a pot.  I am super excited about them!  I also found a couple of fun peppers to try.  One is a mini bell pepper and the other one starts white and turns red.  I will need to start all of those inside, gah!  I haven't had great luck in the past with starting things inside.  Usually I can get them to sprout and get a couple of leaves, but that is when I run into trouble.  However, here I will be able to put them outside on the deck for the day and bring them inside at night when it cools down, so I hope that solves my problem.

Today I got outside for a couple of hours in the afternoon.  I was able to get my trellis nets up and build my pea tower.  I also got my cucumbers (3 varieties, including a lemon one), melons, and peas planted.  I am using some seed leftover from last year, so I'm not sure that it will all come up.  It seemed silly to buy all new seed when my seeds from last year said "plant by Dec. 2011" and it's only March 2012.  Guess I will find out if I am smart or just plain cheap in a couple of weeks!

Oh yeah, and I finally pruned that darn Wisteria.  It still looks kind of snarly, but much better!

Better...now if it would just bloom or get some leaves or something!

Tomorrow I am headed for the front deck  I have pots to fill with soil, a couple of plants to pot, and some more seeds to plant.  I need to start planning what pretty plants I am going to put up there as well.  So much gardening, so little time!

  1. Most of the seeds from last year should come up. I use 'em up, too. Everything from last year came up except for one variety of eggplant. They may sprout yet!

Did you hear about the seeds they found in the permafrost in Russia? They were thousands of years old, and they grew! They planted seeds from the variety that grows today to see how the plant had changed over time. Really cool!

I love reading about your gardening exploits in the middle of our winter! Since there's a couple of feet of snow in the back yard right now, we have a bit of a wait til we can get started with our outdoor stuff!
